Work is due to start the week commencing Monday 25th October on a scheme designed to slow traffic speeds in the narrow country lanes around Moorend and Bury Hill in Winterbourne.
Residents of this semi-rural area have raised concerns for a number of years about the speed and volume of traffic using these narrow rural lanes to avoid traffic congestion at the Hambrook crossroads on the A4174 Avon Ring Road.
Consultation was carried out earlier this year on proposals to introduce reduced speed limits and horse warning signs. Responses to the consultation were supportive and the scheme is now going ahead.
The scheme, which will take about a week to complete, seeks to improve the environment for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders and includes:
- A new speed limit of 30mph on Church Lane, Bury Hill, Moorend Road, part of Cuckoo Lane and part of Bromley Heath Road
- A new speed limit of 40mph on part of Bromley Heath Road and part of Cuckoo Lane
- New warning signs
All repeater signs along the country lanes will be mounted on timber bollards to maintain the rural feel of the carriageway.
Councillor Brian Allinson, executive member for planning, transportation and strategic environment, said: “We hope that these measures will help vulnerable road users feel safer in these narrow country lanes. We would urge commuters to respect local residents’ concerns about vehicle speeds in this area and the changes we will be making to speed limits.”
