Residents affected by the ongoing bin workers’ strike in South Gloucestershire can now take their recycling and food waste to a number of additional drop-off points that have opened today (Monday 3rd July 2023).
With the industrial action by employees of the South Gloucestershire Council’s waste contractor SUEZ now set to last until September, the council says it is prioritising black bin collections, including nappy sacks, “as they often contain unpleasant waste”.
Residents are being asked to put black bins out on the usual collection days and report any missed collections.
Staff shortages mean that recycling, food waste and garden waste collections are not being carried out at present, so residents should not put the respective containers out at the kerbside. Instead, these materials may be taken to the council’s Sort It centres in Yate, Mangotsfield and Thornbury (but not Little Stoke, which is currently closed due to the strike).
Extra drop-off locations
Recycling and food waste (but not garden waste) can now also be taken to four additional drop-off locations around South Gloucestershire every weekday between 8am and 2pm. These are:
- Stoke Gifford Park and Ride (Parkway Station) – Hunts Ground Road, BS34 8XX
- Lyde Green Park and Ride – Willowherb Road, BS16 7GG
- Page Road Short Stay Car Park, Staple Hill – Page Road, BS16 4NE
- SGC North Way site, Filton, – BS34 7QG

Extra recycling-only bins
In addition, there will be further recycling-only bins available from 12noon on Tuesday 4th July where residents can deposit cardboard, paper, glass, cans and plastic, accessible 24/7. The locations of these are still to be confirmed and details will be announced as soon as possible (see update below).
Cllr Claire Young, leader of South Gloucestershire Council, said:
“The industrial dispute between SUEZ and UNITE is continuing to cause a great deal of inconvenience and concern to our residents. Until it is resolved, the council will carry on doing all it can to help keep people informed and we urge both parties to reach a swift agreement.”
“We are working with the staff that SUEZ does have available to provide the best level of service possible under the circumstances. We are focusing on black bin collections, so waste like nappies and dog waste will be collected. We’re also working with SUEZ to try to bring additional food waste services on board.”

‘Bring points’ now closed
UPDATE added 31st July 2023.
Following an announcement that the strike action is to be suspended for three days from Monday 31st July 2023, South Gloucestershire council issued the following statement:
“The additional recycling sites will stop operating at 2pm on Friday 28th July and all vehicles and containers will be removed from the sites.”
“Any waste or recycling left at them after this time will be considered fly-tipping and dealt with accordingly. Please use the Sort It centres instead.”
I think food bins should be a priority as lot of older people can get to places aligned what about bradley stoke nothing were have to get bus to take were you said .
If the Black bins are moved to once a month ? Will that mean the reintroduction of larger black bins as they will need to hold more waste???
Will the introduction of ‘ monthly ‘ black bin collections and a substantial hike in the cost of green bin recycling mean a ‘Reduction’ in our council taxes???
