Dozens of young people came along to an open event to learn about an apprenticeship with Merlin Housing Society and the hope of a new job in the new year.
Around 70 would-be plumbers, plasterers and electricians attended the event at Merlin’s apprenticeship partner, South Gloucestershire and Stroud College last Wednesday. They were there to learn more about Merlin’s apprenticeship programme and with the hope of being one of the 13 apprentices the social landlord is taking on next year.
A number of staff were on hand for the young people to talk to and find out more about Merlin’s work, including Merlin Works Managing Director Winston Williams, who said:
“We were delighted with the number of people who turned up to learn about our apprenticeship programme.”
“They showed a real appetite and enthusiasm and we’re confident we will find some good additions to our workforce from these young people.”
“As a growing business we’re committed to providing opportunities for young people to begin their careers, especially at a time when youth unemployment is high. Apprenticeships offer a valuable route into employment for young people, giving them the chance to learn and earn money at the same time.”
Patrick Mcleod, Director of Workplace Training at South Gloucestershire and Stroud (SGS) College commented:
“SGS College working with Merlin is a natural partnership. Merlin is a major employer within South Gloucestershire. Both organisations strive to serve our local communities and the high turnout shows the benefits of the partnership to our South Gloucestershire residents.”
Many of those who came along to find out more about the apprenticeship scheme were Merlin residents. The society made a concerted effort to encourage its young residents to attend the event.
The first three apprentices will start in February, with the other ten starting their apprenticeships in September. They will spend four days a week working at Merlin and the other day studying towards an NVQ at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.
They will be working alongside the seven new apprentices Merlin took on in September. The social landlord is committed to taking on ten apprentices every year in its works team.
