Roadworks in place during the construction of a scheme to tackle traffic congestion and improve safety at the Kingsfield roundabout on the A4174 ring road at Longwell Green (near Asda) have been cleared to keep the traffic moving during the lead up to Christmas.
Works to provide extra lanes and new traffic lights on the roundabout have been on-going for the past 15 weeks, but all major construction works have been completed on time and traffic is now flowing again at this busy junction.
In order to minimise disruption and ensure that all lanes would be open for Christmas, South Gloucestershire Council arranged for longer working days for contractors, combined with overnight and weekend working wherever possible.
Some minor works will continue at the roundabout during the festive season, but this will not affect peak hour traffic flow as all lanes will be open to traffic during the morning and evening peaks.
A temporary 30mph speed limit will be in place for safety reasons until the traffic lights are switched on in January when all electrical works are complete.
Councillor Brian Allinson, executive member for planning, transportation and strategic environment, said: “We arranged the timings on the scheme specifically to ensure that all lanes could be open again during the build up to Christmas – and we hope it will make it easier for people during this busy shopping period.”
Cllr Allinson continued: “We would like to thank users of this roundabout for their patience whilst work was going ahead and hope that they will benefit from the changes when the scheme is fully complete in the New Year.”
