Joint operation to tackle under-age drink sales

Teenage volunteers helped police and Trading Standards officers check whether licensees were prepared to sell alcohol to children.

The operation on Friday April 16 2010 checked a dozen off-licences and convenience stores in Hanham, Kingswood, Oldland Common, Soundwell, Staple Hill, Warmley and Willsbridge.

The two clearly underage volunteers – one male, one female – were only able to buy alcohol in one Hanham store. The shop worker made the sale even after seeing the identity card of one volunteer which showed he was under 18.

The worker who made the sale was issued with an on-the-spot £80 fine. Steps will now be taken to ensure that the sale that did take place will not be repeated, while those who refused to sell will be sent a letter of appreciation.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Rachael Hodges said: “I am pleased to see the majority of licensees taking their responsibilities seriously and refusing to sell alcohol to children.

“We carry out these operations because we know under-age drinking is a key factor in anti-social behaviour which we are committed to tackling. Alcohol was sold to both young volunteers in the one shop which failed and we will be working with the licensee to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

“It is especially disappointing that this shop is in Hanham, where we have been working hard to make sure the anti-social behaviour problems of the past don’t happen again.”

PS Hodges said anti-social behaviour problems had reduced after work by the police, community and other agencies to resolve the issue.

She said: “As well as joint operations like this one, increased police patrols and initiatives like South Gloucestershire Council’s Friday Night Project are having a really positive impact.”

The Friday Night Project offers young people in years eight, nine and 10 the chance to take part in sports at Hanham High School. To get involved contact kim.hazeldine@southglos.gov.uk.
